Classic cars are usually associated with the baby boomer generation, but there’s still a strong millennial population with a keen interest. However, people’s tastes change throughout generations, and younger enthusiasts are drawn to different models. For example, here are 17 classic cars that millennials are overlooking.
Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevy Corvette is an American classic that was rushed into production, causing problems in its early years. This nearly derailed the entire Corvette project, leaving one of the USA’s most iconic exports on a knife edge! Millennials don’t seem to care much for history, though, showing little interest in early Corvettes.
Rover P6
The history of the Rover P6 was at the forefront of technology when it was first put on the market in 1963. However, history takes more of a shine to a car’s looks rather than the impact it had on the engineering industry during its heyday, meaning millennials lack interest in the P6.
Volkswagen Beetle
The VW Beetle has become a permanent fixture on roads across the world since it first entered production in 1938. However, its problematic history has caused millennials to avoid it because, as the BBC reports, Adolf Hitler first came up with the idea for the VW Beetle!
Ford Fairlane
The Ford Fairlane is a lovely-looking car, but it is simply too similar-looking to the Cadillac, one of the most popular vintage cars among younger people. Millennials would much rather fork out the cash for an instantly recognizable car than a lesser-known model. That’s understandable!
1963 Buick Riviera
When it was first introduced in 1963, the all-new Buick Riviera was inspired by European cars and seen as highly fashionable at the time. However, its boxy look doesn’t inspire today’s younger generations, who prefer the curvature and streamlined look of other cars from the era.
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
Unfortunately, many millennial classic car enthusiasts just won’t be able to afford the beauty of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. With its gullwing doors and 1950s styling, few cars match it in looks, but those are features that will have to wait until the millennials gain wealth with age.
1962 Shelby Cobra
The extremely limited production of 1962 Shelby Cobras has resulted in major price rises in recent years. Sadly, this, coupled with the fact the car is stunning to look at and has garnered a legendary reputation, makes it almost impossible for millennials to get their hands on it.
Citroën DS
The Citroën DS, described by British GQ as the coolest thing on four wheels, has everything you’d expect from a staple of ‘60s French culture. It’s effortlessly stylish, much thanks to its Flaminio Bertoni design; the only issue with the car is that it has the potential to be unreliable, putting millennials off.
Jaguar E-Type
Millennials are showing little interest in the Jaguar E-Type, not because it’s poorly made or lacking in style but because it’s so highly revered by the classic car community. This has caused its price to rocket, making it too expensive for most people to justify buying. Maybe it will be achievable for them someday!
Ford GT40
The Ford GT40 experienced a rejuvenation of interest following the release of the movie Ford v Ferrari in 2019. However, this, combined with its rich history, has given the car an almost museum-worthy status, hugely hiking its price into unaffordable levels for millennials.
Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang is one of the iconic manufacturer’s most famous models, but unfortunately, millennials aren’t showing it much love. This is because it’s blighted by engineering and electrical issues, which make it tough to maintain. They’d much prefer something more practical, which is fair.
Fiat 8V Supersonic
Despite its undoubtedly cool name, Supersonic, the Fiat 8V isn’t popular with the younger generations. This is partly because it’s so rare, with only a handful of 1952 models popping up on the resale market in the previous couple of decades. One can dream, though!
Aston Martin DB5
Aston Martin is not wrong when it bills the DB5 as the most famous car in the world; after all, it is synonymous with the James Bond movies! The fact that it’s such a beloved car has made it gloriously expensive, only available to collectors willing to part with a seven-figure sum.
Aston Martin DB4
Not as famous as its successor, the DB5, the Aston Martin DB4 is often overlooked despite being the car that thrust the Aston Martin name into the spotlight. Its beauty is undeniable, but in contrast, its price is unaffordable, making it a car that millennials would love to own but simply can’t.
Jaguar XK120
When it was first introduced in 1948, the Jaguar XK120 became the fastest production car in the world, capable of reaching speeds of 120mph! However, along with the price, millennials are put off by the car’s shape, which, while beautiful, doesn’t possess the level of cool seen in ‘50s and ‘60s models.
BMC Mini
The modern Mini is hugely popular among millennials as it’s affordable and great for city driving. In fact, Business Magazine claims that 5.1 million of these cars have been sold in the past two decades! However, the cute, classic Minis are significantly less desirable, primarily due to their price and lack of reliability.
Renault 4
Last on our list, the Renault 4 is reminiscent of classic Minis and Fiat 500s in shape and size but lacks the name and reputation of its contemporaries, which turns many millennials away. In the ‘60s, it was much loved, quickly becoming one of the favored city cars of its time. Oh, how times change!
